Amaroo
Primary School is situated in Collie, a coal-mining town, 200 kilometres
south of Perth. The school opened in 1950 and has a current enrolment of
430 children and 63 staff (teaching and non-teaching). Amaroo is classified
as a Level 5 Primary School incorporating Kindergarten, Pre-Primary,
Primary, and Koolbardi Aboriginal
Pre-School. We are an inclusive school catering for the needs of all
children.
The school
has a very mixed population base. We cater for many 2nd & 3rd generation
‘Amarooians’ in addition to a large number of transient families, generated
by the recent expansion of many industries in Collie.
The school
caters for a vast range of student abilities from those with learning
disabilities to those who are talented and gifted. We have an “Intensive
Learning Centre” and a large number of Education Assistants to support
children. The Dept. of Community Development, School Psychologist, Chaplain,
Child & Adolescent Mental Health and local paediatric services play a vital
role in the pastoral care of our school community.
School
decisions, where possible, are made through input from all stakeholders. The
staff & School Council are key components of a collaborative decision making
process.
The school building is regarded as one of the
finest examples of 1940’s school architectural style. Key facilities
include a library, a music room, art/craft room, a covered assembly area and
education support facilities. There is a four-year old Kindergarten (Glenlee)
and Collie Aboriginal Pre-School (Koolbardi)
off-site. Two full time five-year old Pre-Primaries are on site.
Amaroo has continued to distinguish itself by
the quality of staff it attracts and graduating students it produces. There
is a comfortable balance of youth and experience amongst the teaching staff
and its ability to function as a team in all aspects of school operations
ensures maximum productivity and effectiveness.
